Reverse Osmosis Produces Highest Quality Filtered Drinking Water

If you want the best tasting and most highly-filtered healthy drinking water, we recommend an under the sink reverse osmosis system.

RO also removes salt. So it’s ideal for those on a low-salt diet.

Why Consider a Reverse Osmosis System Under Your Sink?

Our tap water in Fallbrook, Bonsall/Rainbow, Vista, Oceanside and Temecula passes current government water quality standards. However, we’re continually hearing about “emerging contaminates” such as PFAS chemicals, drugs and other dangerous contaminates that are not adequately tested for in our municipal water supplies.

So while most folks buy filtered water or use carbon filters in their homes for better taste, we also care about better quality drinking water.

Water from reverse osmosis (RO) is both better tasting and highest quality. RO systems remove more contaminates than any other filtration system. That’s especially important for those with compromised immune systems.

Duke University Study Concludes Reverse Osmosis is Best at Removing PFAS “Forever Chemicals”

Perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids, are substances commonly known as PFAS. They have been linked to health problems from cancer, thyroid and other endocrine disorders and even obesity.

These chemicals are used extensively in fire-fighting foam. They’re also in everyday consumer products. You find them in cleaning products, pizza boxes, cookware, stain repellants and a multitude of other sources.

PFAS even fall back to earth in rainwater.

So it comes as no surprise that PFAS chemicals are also prevalent in water supplies across the country. Surprisingly, however, most PFAS chemicals are not routinely tested for in municipal water supplies. In fact, there are no scientific tests for thousands of PFAS. Yet, according to independent studies, PFAS that can be tested for are more prevalent in our drinking water than once thought.

EPA Action Plan to Test for PFAS in Water Supplies

EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler announced a new method to test for additional PFAS in a press release in December 2019. He called it a key milestone in moving toward standard testing. “We can now measure 29 chemicals, marking a critical step in implementing the agency’s PFAS Action Plan—the most comprehensive cross-agency plan ever to address an emerging chemical of concern.”

7,800 PFAS Chemical Varieties — Current Scientific Tests for Only 45 of them

According to the Metropolitan Water District — which supplies water for Fallbrook, Bonsall, Vista, Oceanside, and Temecula — “there are more than 7,800 variants of PFAS chemicals …. Current science allows for detection of only up to 45 different kinds of them.”

Therefore, we don’t know how many of the other 7,000+ PFAS chemicals are in our tap water. Consumer testing kits are available to supposedly test for PFAS chemicals (at over $200), but again they can detect only a fraction of 7,800 varieties of PFAS chemicals.

PFOS and PFOA are two of the chemical variants within the spectrum of 7,800 PFAS chemicals that have been the most studied and which have scientific methods for measuring their levels in drinking water. So when you read information from your local water supplier that they test for PFAS chemicals, they actually can only test for the level of PFOS and PFOA and a few other varieties of PFAS chemical contaminates.

PFAS Difficult to Measure and Even More Difficult to Remove

Scientists call them “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down and actually accumulate in our bodies. According to the EPA, they have been linked to cancers, low birth weight in babies, thyroid disease, impaired immune function and other health disorders. Unfortunately they are also extremely difficult to remove from public water supplies. Even most carbon filter systems in our homes do not eliminate PFAS.

Synopsis of Duke University Study

Duke University released an in-depth study of the effectiveness of removing 16 PFAS chemicals using home water filtration systems in February 2020. The study concludes that not all in-home use drinking water filters remove PFAS. In fact, some carbon filters, if not properly maintained, can even make PFAS worse.

“All of the under-sink reverse osmosis and two-stage filters achieved near-complete removal of the PFAS chemicals we were testing for. In contrast, the effectiveness of activated-carbon filters used in many pitcher, countertop, refrigerator and faucet-mounted styles was inconsistent and unpredictable. The whole-house systems were also widely variable and in some cases actually increased PFAS levels in the water.”

Heather Stapleton of Environmental Health at Duke’s Nicholas School of the Environment.

How Reverse Osmosis Works

Basically, RO uses pressure, pushing tap water through membranes, separating out particles of larger IONs and impurities. The impurities are diverted down the drain and the filtered water then goes through the faucet for drinking and cooking.

The RO system first passes tap water through filtering “stages”. Each filtering stage removes certain impurities such as chlorine before pressing the water through the RO membrane. Generally speaking, the greater number of stages the RO system uses, the purer the resulting water. Likewise, tinier membrane holes produce purer water.

Since salt, manganese, iron, fluoride, lead, calcium and other minerals consist of larger ION molecules than water, the RO membrane filters them out and down the drain. For those concerned about the loss of beneficial minerals such as calcium and magnesium, however, the World Health Organization (WHO) published studies that should alleviate concerns. WHO concluded that majority of healthy minerals needed for human body is from food or dietary supplementary sources and not from drinking tap water.

Reverse Osmosis is Only Technology to Remove Most Emerging Contaminants

According to the International Water Association: Water filtered or treated by RO is pure, clean, and healthy. RO treatment system is currently the only technology that can remove most of the emerging contaminants (i.e., prescription drugs and perchlorate) including other contaminants  (i.e., Arsenic, Cyanide, and Fluoride) that are difficult to remove by other treatment methods.

5-Stage Process

  1. Sediment filter reduces dirt, sediments, sand and other physical particles
  2. Carbon block provides protection to the RO membrane by removing chlorine and sediment
  3. Another carbon block further removes the chlorine and sediment
  4. Reverse Osmosis membrane reduces high percentage of dissolved inorganics and total dissolved solids
  5. Post carbon filter improves taste and enhances and clarifies water

Penguin Water Premium RO System Plus Alkaline 6-Stage Process

Removes all the contaminants of the 5-Stage Process RO System plus adds an Alkaline chamber that raises the pH to over 9.5, increases the ORP, adds hydrogen, and minerals to the water.
